The Lady Rams track and field team continued their OK Red tradition of excellence by winning their 13th conference title of the last 14 years this past Friday evening, May 21, at Jenison High School. Rockford scored a total of 191 points to easily outdistance runner-up East Kentwood, who finished with 147 points. The Lady Rams captured nine first-place finishes out of the 17 total events along with five runner-up finishes. Individual event champions were Sarah Birkmeier in the pole vault (12’0”), Samantha Mette in the 100 hurdles (15.41), Abby Blanchard in the 100 dash (12.74), Jane Hawks in the 1,600 run (5:06.14), and Blanchard again in the 200 dash (26.20). The Lady Rams were successful in winning each of the four relay events for the day. The 3,200 relay was won in a time of 9:30.67 by Katie Carlson, Catie Rietsema, Taylor Manett and Hawks. The 800 relay was won in a time of 1:44.57 by Rachel Jerrils, Courtney Klawieter, Margaret Smiley and Blanchard. The 400 relay was won in a time of 50.21 by Klawieter, Elise Scheerbeek, Smiley and Blanchard. The 1,600 relay was won in a time of 4:02.37 by Smiley, Katie DeHaan, Jerrils and Carlson. Runner-up finishes were accomplished by Kylie Basarabski in the discus (109’11”), Rachel Herald in the high jump (5’3”), Manett in the 1,600 (5:07.39), and the 400 and 200 dashes by Jerrils (57.49 and 26.25). The next major competition for the Lady Rams is the regional championship, which will take place on Saturday, May 21 at Houseman Field in Grand Rapids.
