Fire trucks and personnel from three fire departments responded to a blaze at an American Gas and Oil structure fire on Division Avenue in Sparta on Thursday, January 28 at around 3 p.m. The Sparta Fire Department was first on the scene and called for backup of trucks and firefighters after fire was discovered in one of the buildings on the property. In 13-degree temperatures, firefighters from Alpine and Algoma helped Sparta vent the building after the fire was contained. The structure had heavy smoke damage. According to the firefighters, at the same time this incident was underway, there was another call for aid from the department from a Sparta business as well as a medical call for help in Kent City. The stretch of Division Avenue was shut down for about an hour while the fire trucks blocked both lanes. The Kent County Sheriff’s Department and Sparta Police also responded.
