‘Live palms are back, summer has started’

Last year, live Florida palm trees decorated the lake side of The Score Restaurant & Sports Bar. “In response to the excitement they created, we decided to bring them back,” stated Joe Locke, managing partner at The Score. “Our guests felt like they were transported to south Florida when our back yard transformed into a tropical paradise complete with a thick carpet of Michigan beach sand, lakeside dining, enjoying sensational sunsets over the water. Our guests loved it and it was like having a vacation in Florida every day.” He added, “This year our beach will be filled again with dozens of 30-foot palm trees and tropical plants. We’ve also expanded our Sunset Bar and added additional seating. We’re gearing up for a great Michigan summer, south Florida style, headlining with music seven nights a week from classic rock to reggae, featuring local and regional bands like The Outer Vibe of Rockford.” Locke concluded, “Our goal is for our guests to enjoy a mini tropical vacation for a day getaway or for the whole summer. Seems like people today need to escape where they can relax and put their feet in the sand, sit under live palm trees, feel the Michigan breeze, sip a chilled piña colada, enjoy our new summer menu and listen to live music and catch a sensational sunset.” According to Locke, The Score is local and wants to serve local. “Last year our beach venue helped raise monies for local fundraising organizations like Volleyball for Mitchell and the Gilda’s Club of Grand Rapids,” commented Locke. “This year we will continue our effort to serve more local organizations.” The Score Restaurant & Sports Bar is locally owned and operated at 5301 Northland Drive, near West River Drive. 2009 Ultimate Turkey Bowl to benefit God’s Kitchen North

November 5, 2009 // 0 Comments

On Wednesday, Nov. 25, two events will take place: one based upon social networking and the other based upon helping Rockford families who have fallen on tough times. The latter is the 2009 Ultimate Turkey Bowl to benefit God’s Kitchen North, which will take place from 7 to 11 p.m., at The Score Restaurant and Sports Bar, 5301 Northland Drive NE, Grand Rapids. Individuals will be making contributions to earn the right to become Top Turkey Bowler or earn the title of Top Hen Tosser while enjoying the sounds and videos of the infamous Jimmy Buffett on the large screens throughout The Score. There will also be a donation barrel so folks can drop off food items. All food items and funds raised will be donated the next day, Thanksgiving Day, to God’s Kitchen North in Rockford. The former is the inaugural event of the newly established Parrot Head Club of Grand Rapids, an organization founded by Kelly Henrickson of Belmont. “There are so many needs in our area. Why not host events that center around having fun while doing good for our neighbors at the same time?” Henrickson stated. There are over 200 Parrot Head clubs throughout the country, Canada and Australia. The Grand Rapids club is the 210th. God’s Kitchen North, a program of Catholic Charities West Michigan, serves hot meals to those in need in northern Kent County. Every Thursday evening, meals are served from 6 to 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Consolation Parish’s family center, 4865 Eleven Mile, Rockford. This no-cost dinner is served to anyone who visits.
