Farm market contest exhibits democracy in action for everyone—young, old alike

All the way from the city of Wijk bij Duurstede on the Rhine River in the Netherlands are (l–r) siblings Marcel, 6, Miriam, 10, and Annelies Boogaard, 12. The Boogaard kids were in the USA along with their parents, visiting family in the Rockford area. While here, they took in the Rockford Farm Market and told us they were “blown away.” Farm markets are everywhere in the Netherlands—for that matter, throughout Europe—and the kids said they thought our hometown farm market was “really neat.” Because sisters Miriam and Annelies both had e-mail addresses, they were able to cast votes for Rockford in the nationwide America’s Favorite Farmers Markets contest. With no age or citizenship restrictions required to vote in the contest, their smiling faces tell a thousand words.
